Unseen Poem
How to approach the unseen poem
Consider the following
- Read the poem 3 times
- Examine the title - does it relate to the content?
- What type of poem is it? Sonnet, narrative etc.
- What is your reaction to the poem? Look for all levels of meaning that may be in it.
- Remember the language of poetry is made up of: imagery, words, sound, rhyme, grammar, alliteration, metre, onomatopoeia
- You must connect with the poem/ poet and always use poem to back up your interpretation
Consider the following
- Stanzas
- Sonnet form
- Lines set apart
- Title
- Words - literal or metaphorical
- First impression - opening, closing words, phrases, images etc.
- Second reading - explore the questions, underline key words
- Language - formal, colloquial etc.
- Imagery - is it effective? Look at metaphors, similes, comparisons etc.
- Punctuation - purpose? Does it create expectation, sense of closure, uncertainty etc.
- How does the poets thoughts and feelings develop
- Sounds - alliteration etc.
- Theme
